NM Solar Group Becomes Employee Owned

NM Solar Group NM Solar Group

I started NM Solar Group in 2015.   It had always been my dream to start a company.   I had been warned of all the risks and challenges, but they didn't scare me. In my heart, I knew I could do it.

As the son of entrepreneurial parents, I learned that the key to any successful business venture is hard work. Quite simply, I was taught that if you just kept the faith and kept working, eventually you’d get to the other side. So that was what I did.

The first year of NM Solar Group was very easily the hardest year of my life to date.  As any prospective small business owner will tell you, being solely responsible for the success of your dream can be daunting.

Throughout the stresses of the first year, there were several months where I was sick to my stomach every single minute of every single day. It was during that time that I realized the true challenges of entrepreneurship. No one wanted to help with anything; prospective advertisers, software programmers, and other business owners took advantage of me. I had never felt so alone or frustrated.

But I stuck to my dreams and to parents’ advice. I worked hard, I kept the faith and piece by piece, NM Solar Group came together. In year two, with the right people by my side, the business grew 500%. What a miracle.

With growth, comes problems. As the demand for solar increased, the need for NM Solar group to expand was apparent so we migrated from our home base in Albuquerque and established a second location in Alamogordo. Initially, working in both Alamogordo and Albuquerque proved to be much more difficult than I could’ve imagined. However, thanks to the great people in Alamogordo, and their acceptance of us, the expansion paid off. We were able to bring our solar services to an entire community; they took care of us and we took care of them. Still, having so much growth and only having one me made it somewhat scary to be the sole owner of an LLC.

NM Solar Group quickly became the largest residential solar installer in the state of New Mexico. Our success is primarily attributed to our fair pricing, honest dealings and customer focused values. With all of this evolution and activity, I wanted the culture to continue. I wanted the company to succeed. I wanted the employees who built the company to be rewarded for the hard work. But wanting it wasn’t enough and I knew I needed guidance in getting us to where we wanted to go.

During my research, I explored many different options: business brokers, venture capitalists, partners or even franchising but still, nothing felt quite right. As a company, we had built such an amazing culture of honesty, hard work and trust. I had to protect it! And as I learned more about ESOP programs, I knew it was the right fit.

By choosing the Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP), the employees that have worked tirelessly to build this company become it's true owners. That’s right, I’ve sold NM Solar Group! But to the best buyers around: my employees. As an authentically employee-owned company, NM Solar Group will continue to service our clients and provide the best experience possible. Prior to organizing the ESOP, I worked hard to build the best executive team, the best project management teams and the best install crews possible. It was no easy feat and it was certainly not without hardships, but we did it.

So what changes? Giving each employee a vested individual interest in the company’s success guarantees that we will reach new heights in our achievements as a team. It means that every screw on every system will be fastened by an owner of the company. Every service call placed to an NM Solar Group employee will be placed to an owner of the company. The person sweeping the floor in the warehouse? You guessed it. An owner. The successes and challenges of the business will be shared by every employee at NM Solar Group which means our team really, truly cares.

NM Solar Group’s mission is to do as much solar as possible, the right way. I fully believe in our mission, more so every day. Over the past few years, the solar coaster has been more intense than I could’ve imagined but I am looking forward to continuing to lead the company, now as an employee. In doing so, NM Solar Group will continue to lead the industry and personally, I hope to continue to bring solar to home and business owners throughout New Mexico.

NM Solar Group, a local and employee-owned company, would love to bring solar to your home and into your community. We are, without a doubt, the best solar provider for New Mexicans. We’re helping homeowners, we’re growing and we sure aren’t done yet.

Inverters: What you should know

Solar Inverters

Inverters are not always the first thing that comes to mind when considering adding solar to a home or business. But an inverter chosen for a PV system is equally as important as the panels. Below we will go over the advancements in inverter technology, and explain why NM Solar Group uses the best solar inverters on the market.

Differences in Solar Inverters

String inverters were the original system to change DC energy (raw energy) to AC energy (the energy that prominently runs through your home). The problem with string inverters is they are like Christmas lights. They can only produce power to the lowest current, so any shading on a panel or a lower producing panel effects the entire system.

Then came the micro inverter. Leading the charge was phase, AP systems, and behind that was Solar bridge micros. They change DC energy to AC right at the panel.  Allowing clients to see panel for panel monitoring and allowing installers to use many different planes for installs.
Solar Edge came in after and changed the game. Please reference their stock price compared to enphase or the owner of Solar Bridge Sunpower. Solar Edge took the best of both worlds. Parallel or each panel independently operate and they send DC energy down to a central inverter making it cheaper and easier to add a battery. Each optimizer still allows you to monitor the panels individually but it also helps each panel to produce the optimal amount.   The largest transfer or loss of energy happens when DC gets changed to AC. Doing that that inside of a garage or on a shaded side of your house is much more efficient and better for the electronics than doing it on the hot roof.
At NM Solar Group we chose to use Solar Edge with optimizers because we believe in doing what's best for our clients and making sure their systems run properly as long as possible.

NM Attorney General Sues National Solar Company

Bad Solar Practices by National Solar Comapny

New Mexico Attorney General is filing a lawsuit against a national solar company, who has been locking clients into 20-year contracts where they are bound to a lease agreement, paying the company for their electricity generated by the solar panels installed on their homes. This is a common practice among national solar companies, who sell leases or power purchase agreements. With this particular national company, the rate the client pays  for their electricity increases by over 72% in the 20-years of the agreement.

NM Solar Group Always Chooses Best Practices

From the perspective of NM Solar Group we are deeply saddened to see when New Mexican's get treated poorly. We think solar can be such a positive experience to save money on electricity, increase the value of your home, and to live a more renewable lifestyle. It isn't okay to use something great like solar to manipulate others.  We believe in being fair with our clients and them being fair with us, and that solar should be owned by the consumer.  When NM Solar Group was created we made a conscious decision to never sell leases or Power Purchase Agreements.  We know nothing in this life is free and never wanted to portray that to our clients. Transparency is important to us and from the start of the company we chose simple financing and straight forward terms.
We are committed to continuing to do the best job we can to bring solar the right way to New Mexico.

New Mexico Senate Passed State Tax Credit for Solar

About Solar Tax Credits

In 2016 the New Mexico tax credit for residential solar installation expired. The prior tax credit was a 10% income tax credit up to $9,000 for qualifying PV systems installed on residential homes, small businesses and agriculture enterprises.

New Mexico Solar Tax Credit passed through the Senate, it is now making its way to the house for review.

Tax Credit Passed Through the Senate

The New Mexico Senate voted 35-6 on Monday, Feb. 12th for a bill would that would reinstate the tax credits that expired in 2016 with a cap for annual credits at $5 million. The new credit would gradually decline from 10% of costs to 6% over a 15-year period. The bill will now be moved to the House, and will hopefully be passed before the session ends on Thursday. If passed through the house, it will move to Gov. Susana Martinez's desk for approval.

The Benefit of the New Mexico Tax Credit

This bill would benefit households, small businesses, and farms. As always, we hope New Mexico can become an example of sustainable living for the rest of the country. If New Mexico reinstates the state income tax credit, jobs will be created, we will be closer to our goals for the Paris climate agreement, and we can guarantee a beautiful state for future generations.

Why Solar Matters To Me (Part 3- Environmentalism)

Happy Thursday from William at NM Solar Group! Exciting things are happening at the NM Solar Group headquarters. We have new additions to our team, special projects on the horizon, and a new market we are exploring. I could not be more excited or proud to be a part of such an amazing solar company, started from the ground up in Albuquerque, and built on a foundation of strong values and a commitment to our beautiful state of New Mexico. I previously discussed why solar matters to me in the context of economics and energy independence, and today I will outline the important factor of environmentalism.

NM Solar Power; Environmentalism; NM Clean Energy

Future Generations

My son Leon just turned three years old recently. He is the most enthusiastic and inquisitive child I have ever met and is obsessed with art, building things (plastic tools no longer appeal to him), and numbers and letters. I envision such great things in his future and I can't wait to witness him grow into the person he will ultimately become. Heck, it is happening far faster than I ever imagined possible. That being said, it is my responsibility as a parent to do everything I can to ensure he is given every opportunity in life and a safe and healthy world to live in.

One of the hardest parts of being a parent is accepting that I cannot always protect Leon or control all external factors. Daily news stories paint a scary picture of the world and I pray that things improve for my son's future. Many areas of the country suffer from terrible air quality and other environmental dangers. Climate change is a polarizing topic in many circles, but it is hard to debate the need for clean air to breath and clean water to drink. Solar power is a clean alternative to dirty fossil fuels and provides a way for individuals like myself to do our part in helping our local environments for our children's future.

Environmentalism takes many forms, but the basic idea that I adhere to is a focus on how my actions impact the world my son will inherit. That is why I do my small part to recycle, support local agriculture and businesses as much as possible to reduce carbon footprints, conserve water, and ultimately why I will be installing a solar system on my home. Taking consideration of the manufacturing processes and raw materials of solar panels, solar systems have a net positive energy payback time of six months or less so they almost immediately have a positive impact on your carbon footprint. Solar provides abundant power to your home free of greenhouse gas emissions or the need for harmful fossil fuels. An average solar system will provide the same impact as planting 155 trees every year. If more people install solar systems, we can reduce the air pollutants that cause many damaging health issues.

Solar Power Matters

Ultimately, my obligation is taking care of my family. A new solar system for our home will save us a meaningful amount of money each month, increase our property value, free us from the grasp of a greedy monopolistic corporation, and help ensure my son has a clean and livable environment to grow up in. It is really a no-brainer for us at this point.

New Mexico Deficit

New Mexico Deficit On The Rise

Solar energy companies in Albuquerque

New Mexico is currently running a large financial deficit.  The New Mexico deficit has been caused by many different things.

Mainly, the fact that we hung our hat on oil and gas and population growth in New Mexico is negative.

A lot of people want to blame Susana for this New Mexico deficit, but for me I blame the state as a whole.   WHY AREN'T WE FOCUSING ON OUR GREATEST ASSET?   The sun.

Best Sun In Unitied States

We have literally the best sun in the entire United States for solar.   This asset can't be duplicated in any other state.

New Mexico solar is where it is at!  We have a solar panel testing facility in Albuquerque called CFV that tests solar panels from all over the world because of our great sun.

The irradiance that is produced is 30-40% more than San Diego.   Many consider San Diego the capital of solar in the USA.

Transmission Lines Are Available

New Mexico as a state has decided to start shutting down the Four Corner power plans that do coal.   Their is a transmission line that could allow us to push electricity to California.

Why don't we sell them electricity produced by a large solar farm?    California currently buys electricity at about twice the rate than New Mexico does.

If we produced electricity for them we could not only get our deficit under control, but we could create a wealth never before seen in New Mexico.  We have the sun.

We have the transmission line.  All we need is some action.

Debt Free Solar Company in Albuquerque

Nm Solar Group LLC is currently now operating completely debt free.

We charge the lowest amount per watt in the state out of any other solar company doing any type of volume (aka legally operating).

We have only had five star reviews from our clients and haven't ran into a single problem we haven't been able to overcome.   Join up with us and lets use the greatest asset New Mexico has.   The sun.

Own your New Mexico Solar

Own your New Mexico solar.   Solar isn't something that you do everyday.

In New Mexico, we tend not to move around a ton and solar is a 25 year commitment for that house whether you live there or not.

"Free" solar doesn't exist.   A lot of National companies will tell you a lot of things.

They aren't here to stay and don't have a vested interest in our community.  Whether you do a

purchase, lease, or power purchase agreement there are ALWAYS costs.  All of these ways are cheaper than the Utility.

Purchase Power Agreement and Leases

Power Purchase agreement and leases claim to be free equipment and then the client purchases the energy produced from the their solar array on their roof.

What they don't tell you is that the lease or power purchase agreement's are two to three times more than buying a system over the life of their long confusing contract.

Own Your Own Solar Array, 3 Reason Why

Owning your New Mexico solar is the best way to go for three reasons.

  1.  You don't have a long term contract with a company that cares nothing about you or the New Mexico community
  2. With a purchase you get appraisal value to your home.   With a lease or a power purchase agreement there is no appraisal value possible.
  3. Keep your tax credits.

All of these things are great reasons to own your own solar.
