The Mescalero Apache Reservation

September 5, 2018

The Mescalero Apache Reservation was formally established in 1883 by then President Ulysses S. Grant and consists of 460,000 acres of land in New Mexico. Initially, only 400 members of the Mescalero tribe inhabited the reservation but they were soon joined by the remaining members from the Lipan and Chihuahua tribes.

The reservation has long been recognized by American, Mexican and Spanish treaties. Today, the location is mainly associated with Geronimo, Mangas Colorado and Conchise and the descendants of these significant leaders still live in the native homelands that were established there.

The Mescalero Apache Reservation is open to the public and tourism is a leading means for the council and members of the tribe to provide employment and an income for tribal members. World class resorts, hotels, and other accommodation facilities have in fact made the reservation and ideal vacation destination for all kinds of people looking for different entertainment options.

Skiing Golfing and, Hunting

In winter, the ski slopes are a major attraction sporting 10 ski lifts and slopes that range in difficulty levels. Big game hunting is also a featured activity and this is one of the few places left in the United States where visitors can hunt bear and elk during different seasons.

Close by you can also find Holloman Air Force Base, that you can also visit and learn some great information.

Throughout the rest of the year, the Inn of the Mountain Gods Championship Golf Course provides golf enthusiasts with a challenging and entertaining holiday. The golf course is combined with a casino and other facilities that make it an ideal destination to provide for multiple entertainment needs and is great for the entire family.

For those looking for a more rustic holiday setting, camping, fishing and boating in any of the three recreational locations set within the borders of the reservation is a must. The scenery is simply breathtaking no matter what time of year you choose to visit with canyons, lakes as well as flora and fauna to keep outdoor enthusiasts captivated.

Seasonal Celebrations

Different events and celebrations are available throughout the year as well as programs that allow the public to learn more about the Apache Mescalero tribe and the history of the area. Most notably, the 4th of July celebrations are an event that simply should not be missed.

Visitors are provided with the opportunity to observe the sacred coming-of-age ceremony in the early hours of the morning of the 4th of July. The celebrations throughout the day consist of a parade (synonymous with the 4th of July), a rodeo and genuine pow-wow.

Indians have used and worshiped the sun for years, and if you live in the area you should be using the sun to your advantage also.
